Sandpiper Bay News

Sandpiper bay Golf And Country ClubSandpiper Bay endured a difficult summer as its Superintendent Jay Varallo passed away on May 31, due to cancer. Jay was a fixture at Sandpiper for over 15 years, and was responsible for the “grow in” of the additional nine hole Bay course, which was added in 2000, and was responsible for the 2007-2009 conversion of bent grass greens to MiniVerde Bermuda. With Jay’s leadership and dedication to great course conditions, Sandpiper won the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course of the Year in 2010. He will be sorely missed.

In his place, the Club has hired Jon Stewart , who comes from the Grande Dunes Resort and Member Clubs. Trained by well respected men like Randy Allen and Steve Martin, Jon has taken over since mid July, and is now leading the Sandpiper team into a new era. Jon has a degree in agronomy from NC State University, he is married and has a 3 year old girl, and twin 10 month old boys.

Later this summer, Sandpiper will proudly host several rounds of the World Amateur, and will participate in the Folds of Honor Patriot weekend. The courses are in great shape and tee times are readily available, especially in the afternoon. There is nothing comparable to playing golf, finishing with a beautiful sunset on the 18th hole, then enjoying a cold beverage with friends and family. Play golf, and Enjoy!!
